Modal Verbs in essays.

It is traditional to use modal verbs in English language essay writing. So it is very useful to be able to use them correctly.

I found this website has a simple, yet easy to understand explanation.

The key point is that after a modal verb, the simple form of the verb is used.

For example,

I can do the washing tomorrow.

After 'can' the verb is 'do' not 'to do'

Another example.

I should work on my assignment tonight.

After 'should' comes 'work' not 'to work.'

Hope that helps.

Effect

Conclusion

OR

Yesterday we used the second structure to write an essay .

Below is an example of a cause and effect essay based on the first structure. This essay is about Obesity and you can see it here.

We also talked about linking words for cause and effect. A list of some linking words is here

A short guide to writing essays.

Hello lovely students, past, present and future...

I have spent the day writing this brief summary of everything you need to know about academic writing.

Please have a look at it and tell me what you think.

Can you understand it? Does it make sense? What else do you need to know?

You can read it as a pdf here.

Formal language

I know most of my students have done this activity. Find better words for the words in this list.

Excellent writing site from the University of Sydney

This website is an overview of what is required for academic writing. The section on grammar is particularly good
